(Woodland, CA) – On May 10, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to proclaim May 15–21, 2022, as National Public Works Week. Yolo County Public Works professionals are responsible for rebuilding, improving, and protecting our County’s transportation, water supply, water treatment and solid waste systems, public buildings, and facilities essential to the quality of life for Yolo County residents.

The Yolo County Public Works and Integrated Waste Management Divisions invite you to attend an Open House on Wednesday, May 18, from 2 to 4 pm to recognize their contributions. The open house will be at the Yolo County Central Landfill, 44090 County Road 28H, Woodland, CA. Yolo County Public Works and Integrated Waste Management staff will be on hand to answer questions, display equipment, and more, including kids’ events, giveaways, and free compost.

“My colleagues and I appreciate the opportunity to promote the excellent work done by our Public Works and Integrated Waste Management Divisions,” said Board Chair, Supervisor Angel Barajas. “From their daily activities like infrastructure and facilities to assisting in emergency management or waste management, their efforts are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities, public health, and a high quality of life.”

The Yolo County Public Works Division maintains 752 miles of public roads, 655 miles of which are paved with 147 bridges spanning various watercourses. To properly perform maintenance road, crew staff repair failed asphalt sections, regrade roads, clean drainages, repair guardrails, install signage and markings in concert with efforts by engineering staff to write competitive grant applications, design and environmentally clear projects, and manage the construction contracts. Ancillary elements of the road network include sidewalk, curb, gutter, storm drains, culverts, roadside ditches, and lighting.

The Yolo County Integrated Waste Management Division does more than accept trash; it transforms it into reusable resources. This includes the conversion of captured renewable biogas from the landfill and digesters to power 2,000 homes and reduces 18,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year, and turns organic waste into 25,000 tons of nutrient rich compost, which will be increased to 90,000 tons in 2023. They recently announced a recycling and reuse program for textiles.

2022 marks the 62nd annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association/Canadian Public Works Association.
